Hendrick Hertzberg glowing review of "Older than My Old Man Now"
DAME EDNA AND LORD LOUDON

Just an excerpt from The New Yorker piece:

I can also report that “Older Than My Old Man Now” is uniformly excellent. It offers not only welcome consolation to those who (like me) are shocked to find ourselves in the relevant age cohort but also, I imagine, innocent amusement to those who—eventually, inevitably—will find themselves there one day, however improbable the prospect may seem at the moment.

Loudon is indeed performing in "Hot Lunch Apostles," a featured production in La MaMa’s 50th anniversary season. Talking Band transforms the Ellen Stewart Theatre into a fairground, complete with game booths, food stands, and geek shows, where sex and religion bash up against each other with perfect theatrical panache.

First produced at La MaMa in 1983, Hot Lunch Apostles imagined a near future with fifty million unemployed in an economically devastated America.

To survive in a time of desperate competition and fervent religion, a traveling troupe of carnival strippers switches to performing stories from the Bible. In its first remounting in 28 years, the play proves to be as prophetic as it is provocative.

"40 Odd Years" AP Review
Loudon Wainwright III, "40 Odd Years" (Shout! Factory)

The familiar shtick is captured repeatedly on a DVD included in this set: Loudon Wainwright III clenches his teeth, waggles his tongue, hops on one leg and sings with bracing humor, candor and power about the things he has seen and done. "My whole cheesy life," as he describes it in one of his best songs.

Wainwright makes his aural autobiography fascinating by mixing comedy and tragedy, with just enough of the latter to give his wit extra bite. Confessional songwriting seems to be a form of therapy for Wainwright, and after all these years, his willingness to share his story in self-deprecating detail remains astounding.

Four CDs are included with the DVD on "40 Odd Years," and while the title is marvelous, the material's just as good. Many of the performances here feature the troubadour solo as he offers insights about childbirth, childhood, parenthood, debauchery, divorce and death; about sex, guitars and roadkill; about family dysfunction, the joys of solitude and the ravages of time. There are also two references to dental floss.

Touted as the next Dylan, Wainwright instead became a one-of-a-kind artist. He arrived on the scene in the late 1960s fully formed, as evident in such early tunes as "Uptown." "I want to elevate up and down with you in the building of the Empire State," he sings. Now in his 60s, Wainwright remains prolific and has done some of his best work lately, including such songs as "Bed," "Surviving Twin" and "My Biggest Fan."

Wainwright has written so many gems that it was impossible to include them all here, but his essay in an accompanying 40-page booklet offers an eloquent apology for any omissions. The excellent liner notes make the set appealing even for longtime fans, as do a CD of rare and unreleased material and the terrific DVD, which includes documentaries, TV performances and lots of tongue-wagging.

FOR AGING WISEASS FOLKIES OF A CERTAIN AGE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH AT LEAST A FEW FAMILY ISSUES

LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III -- 40 ODD YEARS
I've worked on a lot of box sets over the years, but few have ever been as needed and lovingly compiled as this altogether inspired, 4 CD and 1 DVD collection made possible by Executive Producer and devoted Loudon Wainwright III fan Judd Apatow. "40 Odd Years" does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of Wainwright's impressive yet too often underappreciated career, and the DVD included here in a true revelation full of strong performances this lifelong Loudon fan had never seen before. Whether you know it or not, nobody on earth writes about the good, the bad and the ugly of life, love and family quite like Loudon. The liner notes for "40 Odd Years" are also fantastic -- especially the ones that I didn't write.

“A rundown of the 30 best sets lumbering into stores this gift-giving season….” LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III
40 ODD YEARS

What you get: Four CDS and one DVD, the latter a three-hour documentary on the man.
Also, a 40-page book, including liner notes from, of all people, comedy-of-regression director, Judd Apatow.

What’s cool about it: This his son Rufus has unfairly eclipsed him in fame, Loudon Wainwright remains one of the smartest and witttiest singer-songwriters of the last 40 years. He’s a brilliantly incisive writer, and an elegant singer as well. He may have just one hit (the novelty “Dead Skunk”) but, as this set proves, his catalogue rates with the classics.

NPR MUSIC - Loudon Wainwright III Looks Back At '40 Odd Years'
by Ken Tucker

Audio for this story from Fresh Air from WHYY will be available at approx. 5:00 p.m. ET

Lots of artists get entombed in box-set career retrospectives. Few lend themselves to the process as appropriately as Loudon Wainwright III does on 40 Odd Years, because his entire body of work — with a few exceptions like "Dead Skunk" — is about using his life to build his art.

"Red Guitar" is a 1972 song Wainwright wants you to believe is about his very bad behavior while married to his first wife, the late Kate McGarrigle. It was among the first of Wainwright's cut-to-the-bone autobiographical songs, and typical of his superb methodology. No matter how much poor judgment or sloppiness he describes, Wainwright casts it in perfect meter, with rhymes as impeccable as the Brooks Brothers shirts he wore early on to distinguish himself from his flannel-shirted, Bob Dylan-derived contemporaries. A child of East Coast privilege, as he details in "Westchester County," Wainwright has spent his career rebelling against his upbringing and mourning every time he fails to live up to his parents' expectations and his cultural inheritance. This process has yielded the best WASP chronicle of ruined relationships and broken families this side of John Updike, and I'd put the best of Wainwright's short-story songs up against the Rabbitt Angstrom novels any day.

Wainwright is not a cult artist by choice. He's tried for a mass audience in all sorts of ways, including acting jobs on TV shows ranging from M*A*S*H to the 2001 sitcom Undeclared. The latter, a high-quality TV flop, was created by Judd Apatow — now a movie mogul, he's Wainwright's most powerful show-business fan and the co-producer of this box set. Apatow, who also cast Wainwright in a small role in Knocked Up, clearly appreciates the singer's artistic strategy of eloquent arrested development.

An undercurrent of bitterness occasionally seeps into the cracks of Wainwright's music. You can hear it enunciated in the terrific 1993 Dutch television documentary on this collection's DVD titled after one of Wainwright's songs: "One Man Guy." At one point, he flashes a wide, sour smile as he carries his guitar to another one-man gig and says to the camera, "The world is a terrible place; haven't you noticed?" The media success of his son, Rufus, about whom the father has written songs since the young man was a baby, can be a sore point, although Rufus seems headed toward a less prolific, separate-but-equal cult status. As Loudon settles into his 60s, there's no reason to believe that he can't turn such feelings and senior citizenship into a whole new area of exploration.

The collection 40 Odd Years proves Wainwright to be the least limited of cult artists, and the least diminished over time. There are more chapters in song to be written illustrating the power of a highly disciplined artist continuing his life's work: an ongoing portrait of a genial screw-up, honest not to a fault, but to a triumph.

40 Odd Years, Loudon's Career Spanning Box Set On Sale Now!!!

40 Odd Years into an exceptionally prolific and storied career, Loudon Wainwright III is being celebrated with an aptly named career-spanning 4-CD/1-DVD box set, including a 40-page book, with an essay by renowned journalist/author David Wild and an introduction by filmmaker and box set co-producer Judd Apatow.

40 Odd Years features songs from throughout Wainwright’s career, including works of brilliance such as “The Man Who Couldn’t Cry” from 1973’s Attempted Mustache, which Johnny Cash would record with producer Rick Rubin decades later, to the genuinely odd “Dead Skunk,” which became a #16 pop hit and thus a true novelty in the Wainwright canon, to highlights from his most recent projects, including cuts from the Grammy®-winning album High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project. The 3+ hour DVD includes an extremely rare documentary made for Dutch television entitled One Man Guy, TV appearances on the BBC, Saturday Night Live, and Austin City Limits, as well as several unreleased concert performances.

Famed comedy powerhouse Judd Apatow, who co-produced the set with Wainwright, and who credits the artist as a great influence on his own career, writes in his introduction “I wanted to do what he has always done: to be brutally honest, emotional, hilarious and sweet all at the same time. Whenever I wonder what my tone might be, if I am confused, I just listen to a Loudon Wainwright song.”

Regardless of prevailing trends or commercial pressures, Wainwright has always continued to follow his beautiful, often heartbreaking muse, no matter what the consequences. This is why his music endures, 23 albums and 40 odd years later, and why Loudon remains a true American treasure to this day.

It’s all enough to make you hope for another 40 Odd Years!

DUKE PERFORMANCES PRESENTS LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III, CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS, AND JOE HENRY DURING HOMECOMING WEEKEND WITH NORTH CAROLINA ROOTS

September 2, 2010, Durham, NC – Friday and Saturday, September 24 and 25, Duke Performances presents two nights of performances with North Carolina roots: Grammy-winner Loudon Wainwright III presents his Charlie Poole project on Friday, September 24, and the following night, Saturday, September 25, the Carolina Chocolate Drops and singer/songwriter/producer Joe Henry share the stage for the first time ever.

Loudon Wainwright III, backed by a full band of longtime collaborators, will perform High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project, his Grammy-winning tribute to legendary North Carolina troubadour Charlie Poole. Wainwright, who was born in Chapel Hill, created the project to celebrate Poole who while working in the milltowns of the northern Piedmont recorded some of the most popular music of the 1920s. Wainwright’s September 24 performance is the first time since the release of High Wide & Handsome that Wainwright will be performing the Poole material in its entirety. In addition to the Duke Performances appearance, Wainwright will be featured in a Charlie Poole Festival benefit concert the next night in Poole’s hometown of Eden, North Carolina (known as Leaksville in Poole’s time). Wainwright performs at Duke Performances on Friday, September 24, at 8 pm in Reynolds Industries Theater.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops and Joe Henry—all also native North Carolinians—perform for the first time together on the same bill Saturday, September 25. Joe Henry is the world-class producer and singer/songwriter who produced the Drops most recent album, Genuine Negro Jig, a Nonesuch Records release. In addition to that album, Henry has worked with Loudon Wainwright III, Alan Toussaint, Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, and produced the forthcoming Harry Belafonte album. The Durham-based Chocolate Drops have made the jump to national prominence with a style rooted in the African-American string band tradition of the Piedmont. This show is a double-bill with full sets by Henry and the Drops, they appear on Saturday, September 25, at 8 pm in Reynolds Theater.

About Loudon Wainwright III’s High Wide & Handsome:

Wainwright’s Grammy-winning tribute to North Carolina’s legendary banjo picker Charlie Poole collects 30 songs spread between traditionals which Poole made famous and Wainwright originals written about the life of Charlie Poole. The two disc set includes a 70 page booklet chronicling the life and work of Poole who achieved national success and popularity several years before more historically recognized acts such as Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family made their first recordings. High Wide & Handsome features an all-star line-up of backing musicians, including the album’s producer Dick Connette, Wainwright’s children Rufus and Martha, and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile.

About the Carolina Chocolate Drops’ Genuine Negro Gig:

The Carolina Chocolate Drops first release on the Nonesuch label and third release overall is, according to the Drops’ fiddler and singer Justin Robinson, full of music “so old, it’s new again.” An old time string band whose style harkens back to the African American string band tradition of North Carolina’s Piedmont, the Carolina Chocolate Drops worked with producer Joe Henry to produce an album “perfectly recorded, balanced between the best sound this century can deliver and the rustic, throwback feel of an old-time string band in action at a picnic, dance, or rent party in the 1930s” (Allmusic.com).

About Joe Henry’s Blood from Stars:

Henry’s eleventh studio album and third for Anti- Records is a bluesy turn for the Grammy-winning producer and singer/songwriter who “seems to inhabit an older music that never actually existed, or one that keeps being forgotten and relearned, over and over” (Slant Magazine).

Loudon Wainwright III and producer Dick Connette immersed themselves in the Poole canon and they also penned nine new songs about the life and times of the country music pioneer. Connette and Wainwright drew inspiration from Kinney Rorrer's definitive biography of Poole, Ramblin' Blues, and even visited Poole's hometown  of Spray, NC, with Kinney as their tour guide.  They also, however, allowed themselves a little narrative poetic license.
